# What are the main copyright implications?

> TL;DR Copyright rules still apply when using StudyStash.

<Info>
  **TL;DR** Copyright rules still apply when using StudyStash. Ownership of, and liability for, uploaded material sits with the student, and we give both students and institutions a range of tools to stay compliant. StudyStash does **not** train on any uploaded resources.
</Info>

## Student responsibility

Before using the platform, students must accept Terms & Conditions confirming they will not upload copyrighted material they are not entitled to use. Responsibility and liability for uploaded content rest with the student.

<Tip>
  Specific wording for the consent modal can be added on request - [support@studystash.com](mailto:support@studystash.com)

## Upload guardrails

We build in several safeguards to help students make informed and ethical decisions:

<table>
  <tbody>
    <tr>
      <th>
        <p>Guardrail</p>
      </th>

      <th>
        <p>What it does</p>
      </th>
    </tr>

    <tr>
      <td>
        <p>Upload confirmation prompt</p>
      </td>

      <td>
        <p>When set-up, students are asked to confirm they are permitted to upload the resources.</p>
      </td>
    </tr>

    <tr>
      <td>
        <p>Custom disclaimers</p>
      </td>

      <td>
        <p>Institutions can create their own upload disclaimers and consent statements, co-authored with us, setting out acceptable use and copyright responsibilities.</p>
      </td>
    </tr>

    <tr>
      <td>
        <p>Direction to approved sources</p>
      </td>

      <td>
        <p>Students are pointed towards approved and open-source materials, and encouraged to create their own notes.</p>
      </td>
    </tr>

    <tr>
      <td>
        <p>Partner slide deck</p>
      </td>

      <td>
        <p>Information slides shared with partners includes a dedicated copyright section covering best practices and guides.</p>
      </td>
    </tr>
  </tbody>
</table>

## Recommended reading sources

Rather than uploading copyrighted texts, students can draw on open-source and openly licensed material. We can help you assemble recommended reading and upload resource lists from open-content platforms, and integrate with a wide range of these directly so students have compliant material to work from. Uploads are always handled in line with existing licences and agreements.

## Publisher blacklisting and upload restrictions

<table>
  <tbody>
    <tr>
      <th>
        <p>Guardrail</p>
      </th>

      <th>
        <p>What it does</p>
      </th>
    </tr>

    <tr>
      <td>
        <p>Publisher blacklisting</p>
      </td>

      <td>
        <p>Specific publishers or content can be blacklisted at your request so they cannot be uploaded.</p>
      </td>
    </tr>

    <tr>
      <td>
        <p>LMS-only uploads</p>
      </td>

      <td>
        <p>Upon request, institutions can disable all uploads that do not originate from your LMS (e.g. a Canvas-only restriction), although not recommended to all partners.</p>
      </td>
    </tr>
  </tbody>
</table>

<Note>
  ### Immediate access textbook models

  For courses using inclusive access (immediate access) textbook models - where students can only reach a text via a publisher link and cannot download it - that content cannot be uploaded to StudyStash. Students would instead use StudyStash alongside the publisher material (for example, for note-taking and self-testing).
</Note>

## AI content warnings

When StudyChat, StudyStash’s virtual assistant, generates answers that go beyond the uploaded course material, it flags this to the student with warnings such as "Be careful - this wasn't your professor's material ✨" and "This went to the wider web for an answer ✨", so students know when they are working outside approved content.

## Using StudyStash without uploading 📖

StudyStash can be used with no uploaded material or AI at all - as a self-study workspace. This is a fully compliant way to use the platform where uploading is restricted or undesirable.
